Hearts, Great Olympics legends to honour late Awuley Quaye with memorial match

Legends from Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics are set to come together for a memorial match in honor of the late Awuley Quaye.

The match is scheduled to take place at McDan La Town Park on Saturday, June 1, 2024, where former teammates and rivals will unite to celebrate the life and legacy of the revered defender.

Awuley Quaye Sr., who passed away on March 25, 2024, was a stalwart of Ghanaian football, best known for captaining the Black Stars to their third African Cup of Nations title in 1978.

His leadership on the field was instrumental in securing the nation’s prestigious trophy, a feat that has etched his name in the annals of Ghanaian sports history.

Beyond his national team heroics, Quaye was a legend of the Accra Great Olympics, where he played as a defender, demonstrating the same tenacity and skill that made him a national treasure.

His legacy continues through his sons, Abdullah Quaye, who represented the Qatar national team, and Lawrence Quaye, affectionately known as Junior.

The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is set to attend the state-assisted funeral ceremony scheduled for June 8, 2024, at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra.

Dan Kwaku Yeboah, the spokesperson for the family, speaking at a press conference on Thursday, expressed profound gratitude to the government of Ghana, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and TT Brothers for their unwavering support during this difficult time.
